Good podcast, Thanks to you guys I actually just resolved an issue I had with my DVD drive making a weird sound at startup. I went to apple support and found out other people were having the same issue and had to reset the optical drive by putting in a dvd almost all the way in until hearing a click then pulling it out then putting it back in. If anyone else is hearing a weird sound during startup heres a video showing how to reset the optical drive http://km.support.apple.com/library/APPLE/APPLECARE_ALLGEOS/TS2839/TS2839-2.mov

I thought this was a very good podcast. I have recommended it to some new Mac Users as well as some users who just get by. :)

Great podcast, only just recently found whilst I was looking for help and advice on backup strategies.

But (here it comes), I must bring up a point about Safari and “plug-ins”. There are browser plug-ins1 and then there are those extensions that alter Safari through a system hack, Input Managers.

Plug-ins support content within the page (Adobe Flash, Quick Time codecs, there aren’t too many others) and Input Manager hacks load and change running applications, it’s not encouraged, it’s dangerous and it seems Apple have deprecated it altogether2.

It’s the same with Firefox, Adobe Flash is a plug-in and all of those cool things you added? Add-ons, the difference is, of course, that these are Mozilla sanctioned.

Something I am finding very useful with cleaning up after applications is AppTrap, which is a free System Preferences and background program that looks out for any .app that you put in the trash, it then pops up a window that asks if you want to remove any related files, it covers property lists, caches files and folders and anything in Application Support. Very handy.

    1. Typically built on the Netscape API, see all of yours at file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Plug-ins.html

    2. See the changes through the last three major OS X releases,
